Homestead exemptions are a valuable way for homeowners to reduce the amount of property taxes they owe. These exemptions can apply to a portion of a property's value, resulting in a lower tax bill. Texas offers several types of homestead exemptions to eligible property owners.

Here is a breakdown of the benefits you may be eligible for:

Residential Homestead Exemption for Homeowners
If you own and live in your home, you may qualify for a residential homestead exemption. New homeowners can apply through the Tarrant Appraisal District (TAD), and subsequent filings might be necessary for changes in residency or additional exemptions.

Heir Owners
Qualifying heirs to claim a residential homestead exemption on 100% of the property, not just a portion. This applies to heir properties acquired through wills, transfer on death deeds, or intestacy, where at least one owner claims it as a residence homestead.

Additional Exemptions for Seniors and Disabled Individuals
Those over 65 or disabled under Social Security law can apply for additional exemptions. If you qualify for the over 65 or disabled person exemption you are also entitled to a ceiling on school and locally adopted city, county, and special district taxes. The ceiling will provide additional tax relief for future tax years.

Tax Deferrals for Homeowners
Over 65, disabled homeowner or disabled veteran may also defer paying taxes on their residential homestead. The taxes continue to accrue during the deferral along with interest.

Homeowners may also defer the portion of the tax on their homestead if the value of the home is raised more than 5% above the previous year. Interest continues to run on the unpaid portion of tax at a rate of 8% per annum and the deferred tax remains as a lien on the property.

Exemptions for Disabled Veterans or Surviving Spouse of a Disabled Veteran
Veterans with service-connected disabilities can claim exemptions based on their disability rating. A surviving spouse of a veteran may also qualify for additional exemptions.
